Driving License Registration and Renewal
Before you can learn to drive a car, motorcycle OR a three wheeler you must apply for a provisional driving license. If you already hold a valid full driving license and want to learn to drive larger vehicles, minibuses or buses you will need to apply for provisional entitlement for these vehicles. A driving license authorises a person to drive a motor vehicle, motorcycle OR a three wheeler. (Bajaji) The license contains your identification particulars as a qualified driver.
To apply for the license you must be 16,18 years or older.

When to expect your license
ZRA aims to deliver your driving license to you within one day after payment. It will take no longer if your health or personal details have not to be checked. Especial eye test.
New plastic card driving license.
ZRA now issue a plastic card driving license. This decision was taken primarily to help minimize the costs and time of issuing licenses to the public. You will need to wait for your new license for few minutes than before. Please allow at least three to ten minutes for your license to be read if the from was filled correctly.
Paper driving licenses.
Please note that ZRA no longer issues paper driving licenses. This is because it wears out easily. ZRA has also received numerous complaints from members of the public about the size and other complications. Consequently many drivers leave them home as one way of protecting their license. If the old paper driving licenses sent in to ZRA cannot be returned instead you will get the new one after completing the renewal application forms.
Application fees which are:
- 35,000 Tshs for two years
- 45,000 Tshs for three years
- 60,000 Tshs for five years
Note:
You will not be required to take a driving license before eye test examination. If your sight has deteriorated from the date on which your license was issued, new conditions will be attached to your license.
Driving License Renewal
Your driving license is valid for Two, three OR five years from the date of issue depending on the amount of fee paid and must be renewed after this time. Although the expiry date appears on your license, a renewal notification will also be posted to you if you have left your email address.
Steps to follow
- You may renew your license through ZIDRAS System, but you will also have to collect your driving license card at ZRA office in Zanzibar
